When I was younger, my sister had a cat. It scratched me once.
Once.
I taught it to fly and it was very successful, until it hit the wall.
It never scratched me again.
I didn't earn its respect, I *taught* it respect. "Act the way it wants
you to act"? Fuck that shit, it's just a goddamned cat.
