South Park seemingly was a sure bet to go south.
When the crudely animated series from Trey Parker and Matt Stone first
appeared in 1997, we loved it from the start. Couldn't believe how
audacious it was.
But we also predicted South Park probably would have a short shelf
life. "The shock value is going to wear off," we pontificated.
That was more than a decade ago.
The 12th season of South Park makes its Canadian debut tonight on the
Comedy Network.
Who could have dreamed a group of foul-mouthed, cartoon Colorado
school-kids would have so much staying power?
At times being a Canadian fan of South Park has been frustrating,
because air dates for new episodes have been well behind Comedy
Central, which is South Park's network of origin in the U.S. This was
a problem particularly in the first few years of the series, when
Canadians were subjected to the same five episodes over and over
again.
But these days the Comedy Network brings only good news on a couple of
fronts.
First, new South Park episodes are airing in Canada only a couple of
weeks behind the U.S., which is a big improvement on the old system.
And second, the Comedy Network airs South Park uncensored. That
doesn't even occur on Comedy Central in the U.S., and it's something
we heartily welcome as a bizarre north-of-the-border payback for the
inconsistencies of the early era.
Profanity alone doesn't make South Park funny. But it's way better
than bleeping the cuss words.
Some would say that only here does South Park air in its purest form.
Blame Canada, indeed!
The 12th-season debut episode innocently is titled Tonsil Trouble.
That's underselling what transpires, to say the least.
After going in for a routine tonsillectomy, a botched blood
transfusion leaves Cartman suffering from an incurable virus. Cartman
is irate, but he quickly becomes even more irritated because his
disease isn't in vogue anymore in terms of media attention and fund-
raising.
We don't want to reveal too much, but we laughed right out loud when
we saw which musician shows up to perform at Cartman's benefit dinner,
and what Cartman's reaction is.
South Park has had its ups and downs through the years. But the
controversy in late 2005 and early 2006 surrounding the infamous
Trapped In The Closet episode (which made fun of Tom Cruise and
Scientology, and led to the resignation of Scientologist Isaac Hayes
as the voice of Chef) seemed to re-invigorate Parker and Stone.
As its 12th season begins, South Park continues to bust boundaries
with its unique mix of biting satire, social commentary and poop
jokes.
OK, we know this might be blasphemy to some. And trust us, we're
pretty much the biggest fans in the world of the other show we're
about to mention. But consider this objectively:
Relatively speaking, is South Park stronger in its 12th season than
The Simpsons was in its 12th season? Send an e-mail and let us know
what you think.

- Speaking of The Simpsons, season No. 19 continues Sunday on Global
and Fox with an episode titled Smoke on the Daughter. Lisa enrolls in
a ballet class and develops an addiction to second-hand smoke after
being exposed to it by the other dancers.
- Those crazy kids from Degrassi: The Next Generation are at it again
with the first of a two-part spring-break episode Monday on CTV. This
can end with one word and one word only: Charges.
- How would you like to have a TV show scheduled to air tomorrow night
during the international "lights out" hour?
